1,000 Cyclists Expected Sunday By Bob ColonSports Editor Organizers of the Lake Hefner Streak bicycle event Sunday know the odds are in their favor. This is the fourth annual race, and it has rained the previous three years. If it doesn't rain this time, more than 1,000 riders are expected for the 8 a.m. start at Stars and Stripes Park. There will be four distances: 10, 20, 50 and 100 miles. The two shorter fun rides will circle Lake Hefner, while the longer rides will follow an east-west route toward El Reno and Geary. All rides will finish at Stars and Stripes Park. Participants in all rides will begin lining up at 7:45 a.m. Groups will leave the park at three-minute intervals beginning at 8. About 500 riders had registered by midweek. About half were doing the 50-mile ride, one-fourth the 100-miler and the rest the shorter fun rides. "This year, every finisher will receive a commemorative Streak medal," said Red Callaway of the sponsoring Oklahoma Bicycle Society. "The first 1,000 will also receive T-shirts." Trophies will be awarded the fastest man and woman in the century ride, as well as medals for the top three finishers, both men and women, in each age category of the 50- and 100-mile events. Four 12-speed Peugeot bicycles will be given away in drawings. Late-registration fee, in effect this week, is $15 per person and can be paid at any Local Federal Savings and Loan office in the metro area. Or riders can enter at the packet pickup party Saturday from 6 to 9 p.m. at Country Club Village shopping center, N May and Grand Boulevard. Packets may be picked up today at The Runner, 9644 N May. Fun rides will go through the Lake Hefner golf course, then proceed around the lake. The 20-mile ride will circle that course twice. |
